THERE ARE TWO STAGES TO GUM DISEASE. THE EARLY STAGE, GINGIVITIS, CAUSES:

If you use tobacco, you have a higher risk of gum disease. Your gums may actually bleed less, even though they are unhealthy, and you may not realize it is a problem until it's too late. If you use tobacco, you will need to visit your dentist more often to make sure that you remain healthy.
